Shiraz is the Grampians wine region’s top performing variety. Shiraz from the Great Western area is noted for its silky tannins and dark or black fruits; often with a touch of spice and licorice. These wines develop savoury, earthy characters with age. Beyond Great Western, you’ll discover spicy flavours from nutmeg to black pepper, as well as forest fruits, raspberry, blueberry and blackberry. From savoury, meaty characters, to floral aromas and cherry flavours, you can always expect generosity, power and abundant fruit wrapped in velvety tannins in our region’s Shiraz.
Sparking Shiraz is traditionally Australia’s favourite festive drink and is the perfect accompaniment for both savory and sweet dishes served throughout Christmas Day. Seppelt at Great Western has long been the champion of this unique Australian wine style. In 1895, Hans Irvine & Co of Great Western was awarded a gold medal at the Bordeaux exhibition for its ‘Sparkling Burgundy’. Today, Sparkling Shiraz still comes up trumps.
Riesling is the best performing white variety in the region. Cool nights during the growing season guarantees Riesling wines of great acid tension. Grampians Riesling is distinctive for its combination of slate and lime. The palate has a notable mineral core, combined with heady aromas of citrus and lime blossom. Delicious!
Cabernet Sauvignon has been ‘quietly working away’ while its little brother (Shiraz) steals the limelight! Lovers of this wine will be well rewarded with wines of strong varietal character and great ageability. Typically displaying hallmark cassis flavours and cedary notes, our region’s Cabernet Sauvignon is a real treat from our older vineyards.
Pinot Noir is gaining a foothold in the Grampians as a straight varietal. Once grown for the production of sparkling wines, recent selections from original vine stock at Great Western are now producing wines with distinctive Pinotesque character. In a similar vein, Chardonnay with light oak treatment and tight acidity has also found a place in the Grampians.
And for the adventurous… Italian varietals such as Pinot Grigio (or Gris) and Sangiovese are making their mark, while Best’s Dolcetto has a growing legion of fans.
