Best’s Great Western is a renowned winery located in the Great Western sub-region of the Grampians. Established in 1866 by the Best family, it is one of Australia’s oldest continuously family owned and operated wineries. Upon the passing of Henry Best, the winery was sold to the Thomson Family and is now in the safe hands of Managing Director and Vineyard Manager, 5th Generation, Ben Thomson.

Best’s Great Western has a rich history and is known for producing exceptional wines that showcase the region’s unique terroir and particularly renowned for its Shiraz wines. The winery’s iconic Bin No. 0 Shiraz is highly acclaimed and consistently receives accolades for its quality. It is made from hand-harvested grapes sourced from some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world, with some dating back to the late 1800s. These ancient vines contribute to the depth, complexity, and character of the wines produced at Best’s Great Western. Unique, and individual, are frequent descriptions of Best’s Wines Great Western especially when referring to the original Nursery Block and the wines it produces. The Nursery Block, contains almost 40 different varieties as well as the 1868 plantings of Shiraz and Pinot Meunier which are among Australia’s most notable vineyard resources. There’s something very special about the wines from Great Western. The pedigree of the historic vineyards allows them to make elegant, finely structured wines with great intensity and balance.

Built in the 19th century, the Concongella Cellar Door is the heart of Best’s operation. This truly memorable place is housed in the original stables. Henry Best’s journal, with entries dating back to 1866, is on display, along with interesting artifacts and historic family photos.

Visitors can take a free self-guided tour of the underground cellars, which were hand-dug in the 1870’s and view the original Nursery Block plantings, both of which are a significant slice of Australian wine history. Guests can enjoy a range of tasting experiences to suit any palate, ‘Pick a Platter’ cheese boards as well as special events throughout the year.

Once again, Best’s Wines are listed amongst some of Australia’s finest wines. For years our wines have been included in the collection, and we’re thrilled to see two of our finest in the 8th edition. Our Thomson Family Shiraz was named in the First Classified, and Bin No. 0 Shiraz was included as Classified.
